Fume Extraction for Auto Body Shops

Auto body shops have the potential to house numerous respiratory health concerns. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) notes the following chemical hazards involved in Auto Body Repair and Refinishing [1]:

  • Volatile Organics from paints, fillers and solvents
  • Diisocyanates, polyisocyanates, and hexavalent chromium from spray painting operations
  • Silica from sandblasting operations
  • Dusts from sanding
  • Metal fumes from welding and cutting

When considering how to improve the air quality in your shop, it’s important to consider both source capture fume extraction and ambient air cleaning. Source capture fume extraction helps to eliminate hazardous fume and particulate at the source of emission, before it is able to escape into the general working environment. Ambient air cleaners are used for general room air cleaning; they are designed to capture particulate at various micron sizes that escape into the working environment.

Source Capture Fume Extraction
There are several configurations of source capture fume extraction available, and based on what job is being performed, an appropriate model should be chosen. For instance, do you need the fume extraction unit to be mobile, or would a stationary model (ex. wall-mounted) be more practical? Does the unit need to fit into a compact space (ex. under an elevated car) or is there room for a larger unit?

Examples of different options are the following:

The Model 300 and Model 400 Portable Floor Sentry are source capture fume extractors that are equipped with heavy-duty casters and wheels for easy portability. They have small footprints [Model 300= 13″ x 13″ x 14.5″, Model 400= 20″ x 20″ x 17.5″] and are assembled with 68″ and 72″ long (respectively) flame-retardant, self-supportive flex hoses for effortless maneuverability. The Model 300 and 400 Python Portable Floor Sentry are fume extractors that are equipped with either 12′ or 22′ flame-retardant, highly maneuverable flex hoses. These arms also feature magnetic capture hoods that allow the operator to have a “hands-free” option by attaching the hood to the workspace. Fan-Powered and Non Fan-Powered Extractors Arms are available in a wall-mounted configuration [Models SS-250-PEA4 and SS-000-EA4]. There are four exterior exhaust options available for these units. [The Fan-Powered Unit is pictured to the left].

Ambient Air Cleaner
Sentry Air offers a ceiling-mounted, dual-stage filtration system for ambient air cleaning [The Model 2000 Free-Hanging Air Cleaner]. This free-hanging unit features two-speed operation control, a four-way adjustable grill, and a low-maintenance filtration system.

Sentry Air Systems has worked with clients to improve air quality during auto body applications such as light welding, light paint touch-up, and bonding.
