Its electrophilic properties make it a useful feedstock in industrial processes such as the production of TNT and polyurethanes. It is also used as a feedstock to form benzene and xylenes. It is a common solvent and is used to dissolve paints, sealants, rubber, printing ink, and various other materials. It can also be used as an octane booster. Additionally, it is used in biochemistry experiments. <\/span><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 18px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When toluene is applied in these situations, its vapors or fumes can become an irritant to the user; therefore, an effective method of removing these fumes, such as a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/dfhapp.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ductless fume hood<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, is necessary. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; line-height: normal; font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">However, because toluene vapors are both flammable and toxic and extended exposure can lead to problems in the liver, kidneys, blood system, or central nervous system, adequate controls must be used to prevent exposure<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRoman;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Sentry Air Systems<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&nbsp;offers a variety of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ductless fume hoods<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (including <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/customexamples.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">custom hoods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">) and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/chemicalapp.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">fume extractors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> to prevent prolonged exposure to various <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/data.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">chemicals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal; line-height: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Recently in fact, an in-house efficiency <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">test <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">confirmed the ability of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Sentry Air Systems<\/span>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/activated-carbon-filter.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">activated carbon filter cartridge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> to remove chemical or organic vapors from the air stream within a <\/span><span style=\"line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Sentry Air hood<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. For the test a<\/span><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRoman;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> 99% solution of toluene was placed in an open container inside the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/specs\/Ductless-Fume-Hood-Spec-330-DCH.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">SS-330-DCH<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. In order to determine how well the <\/span><span style=\"line-height: normal;\"><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal; line-height: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRoman;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">toluene <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">vapors were absorbed, sampling pumps were used to measure the concentration of the <\/span><span style=\"line-height: normal;\"><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal; line-height: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRoman;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">toluene <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">at four specific locations: within the<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Sentry Air Systems<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> 30&#8243; ductless containment hood<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, on the outlet of the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ductless fume hood<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, on the operator standing in front of the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ductless fume hood<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, and a spot in the room on the opposite end of the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ductless fume hood<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. An independent lab verified the measurements of the <\/span><span style=\"line-height: normal;\"><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal; line-height: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRoman;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">toluene <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">vapor concentration. A second test was performed as a control to compare the <\/span><span style=\"line-height: normal;\"><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal; line-height: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRoman;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">toluene <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">vapor concentration in the room without the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ductless containment hood<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> running.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-indent: -.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">1) <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Sentry Air Systems Model <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/specs\/Ductless-Fume-Hood-Spec-330-DCH.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">SS-330-DCH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> was set up with a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/activated-carbon-filter.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">10 lb Carbon filter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/300series.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">300 Series<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> model fan generates sufficient air flow to keep the average linear face velocity of the hood above 100 feet per minute.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-indent: -.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">2) <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">A total of 100 ml of toluene was measured into a beaker and placed under the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/specs\/Ductless-Fume-Hood-Spec-330-DCH.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">SS-330-DCH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. The sorbent tubes were placed in their respective locations in the laboratory (as stated above). The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/dfhapp.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">hood <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">was placed in operation at 100 fpm and subsequently all the sampling pumps were switched on and their respective flow rates. The air volume rate of the pump inside the hood was set to 50ml\/min. The three remaining pumps were set to 200 ml\/min. The test commenced at the switching on of the sampling pumps and proceeded for 30 minutes, during which time the toluene evaporated from its beaker.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-indent: -.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">3) <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">After the 30 minute sampling period, the sorbent tubes were removed from the sampling pumps, capped and labeled. The remaining toluene in the beaker was recorded to be about 85 ml and then recycled. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-indent: -.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">4) <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Before starting the control test, the testing room was allowed to air out for 2 days. The sampling pumps were placed in their respective locations with fresh sorbent tubes. An equivalent amount (100 ml) of toluene was then placed under the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/specs\/Ductless-Fume-Hood-Spec-330-DCH.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">SS-330-DCH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. The sampling pumps were then switched on. The sampling period of the pumps was again set for 30 minutes, but this time the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/dfhapp.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">hood <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">was never turned on.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-indent: -.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">5) <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">After the 30 minute time period, the sorbent tubes were removed from the sampling pumps, capped and labeled. The remaining toluene in the beaker was recorded to be about 95 ml and then recycled.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-indent: -.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">6) <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Once the two tests were completed, the samples were sent to an independent laboratory (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hihlaboratory.com\/\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">HIH Laboratory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">) for results.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-indent: -.25in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">7) <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Results were analyzed to determine<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/activated-carbon-filter.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> filter efficiency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">R<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">esults:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The sorbent tubes were analyzed by HIH Laboratory and the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/testing\/TolueneReport.pdf\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">results<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">were reported in the following table:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_cJwTmoJJx2I\/S55pqWP-mOI\/AAAAAAAAAFk\/v25vOSTWkUU\/s1600-h\/Toluene+Table.bmp\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5448908775412898018\" style=\"cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 265px;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_cJwTmoJJx2I\/S55pqWP-mOI\/AAAAAAAAAFk\/v25vOSTWkUU\/s400\/Toluene+Table.bmp\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\"><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: TimesNewRoman; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRoman;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Analysis<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/testing\/TolueneReport.pdf\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">results<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> from the independent lab show that the concentration of toluene vapors in the airstream were reduced by more than 99% at the hood outlet and in the ambient air and by 98.2% at the operator\u2019s breathing zone. These results contrast to a natural reduction neither fan nor filter present) in Toluene concentration of 81% at the hood outlet and a 73.3% at the operator\u2019s breathing zone. The results from the control experiment show that the concentration of Toluene will build up quickly around the room and in particular at the operator\u2019s breathing zone. Conversely, the results from the experiment show that the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/specs\/Ductless-Fume-Hood-Spec-330-DCH.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">SS-330-DCH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> filter system basically eliminated any exposure that the operator had to the fumes during this 30 min period. The exposure level while the hood was running was at least 4.5 times less than what it was during the control experiment. Furthermore, had the test been significantly extended, it follows that because the concentrations were still building up in the room that the operator would have likely been exposed to much greater than 5.6 ppm of toluene vapor, whereas, the hood and filter would have prevented this exposure.
