{"id":3007,"date":"2013-04-08T14:28:07","date_gmt":"2013-04-08T14:28:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sentryair.com\/blog\/?p=3007"},"modified":"2013-09-18T13:41:06","modified_gmt":"2013-09-18T13:41:06","slug":"negative-health-effects-of-manganese-fumes-welding-hazards-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/industry-applications\/welding\/negative-health-effects-of-manganese-fumes-welding-hazards-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Negative Health Effects of Manganese Fumes, Welding Hazards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Manganese: Both Healthy &amp; Toxic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manganese\">Manganese<\/a>, a naturally-occurring\u00a0element, is an important component for a variety of manufacturing and industrial operations, especially iron and steel production.<\/p>\n<p>Considered an essential nutrient for humans, manganese assists in a variety of bodily processes including antioxidant function, metabolism, bone development, and wound healing. <sup>[3]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Although manganese is an essential nutrient for humans, it can become toxic at certain exposure levels; especially when manganese <em>fumes<\/em><em> <\/em>are inhaled.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of going through the body\u2019s normal defense mechanisms, the fumes bypass them, accumulate, and subsequently damage vital organs like the lungs, liver, kidney and central nervous system according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). <sup>[1]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Short-term exposure may lead to <a href=\"http:\/\/sentryairsystems.blogspot.com\/2011\/07\/metal-fume-fever.html\">metal fume fever,<\/a> which symptoms include fever, chills, nausea, fatigue, muscle ache, joint pain, and thirst, among others. These symptoms usually resolve themselves within 24-48 hours; however, long-term and chronic exposure to manganese fumes can lead to a disease called <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manganism\">Manganism<\/a> which has symptoms similar to\u00a0those related to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parkinson's_disease\">Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Occupational Risk<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to NIOSH, typical occupations that run the risk of overexposure to manganese fumes\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mining<\/li>\n<li>Ore-Crushing<\/li>\n<li>Metallurgical Operations for iron, steel, ferrous and nonferrous alloys<\/li>\n<li>Manufacturing of:\n<ul>\n<li>Dry-cell batteries<\/li>\n<li>Anti-knock gasoline additives<\/li>\n<li>Pesticides<\/li>\n<li>Pigments<\/li>\n<li>Dyes<\/li>\n<li>Inks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Welding Operations <sup>[1]<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Other occupations that involve the release of manganese-containing fumes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Manganism symptoms may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tremors<\/li>\n<li>Slowed Movement<\/li>\n<li>Walking Problems<\/li>\n<li>Shakes<\/li>\n<li>Loss of Balance<\/li>\n<li>Impotency<\/li>\n<li>Slurred Speech<\/li>\n<li>Extreme Drowsiness<\/li>\n<li>Muscle Rigidity <sup>[1] [2]<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Welding &amp; Manganese<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Workers can be exposed to manganese fumes during a variety of welding operations; it is difficult to\u00a0be specific\u00a0because of differences in and multiple combinations of welding wire, fluxes, and base metals.<\/p>\n<p>NIOSH explains that welders who work with lead, iron and manganese may be at increased risk for neurological health effects. [They also note that &#8220;heat and stress can also contribute to neurological impairments in welders.&#8221;] A recent study showed poorer performance on brain function and motor skill tests from welders who were exposed to low levels of Manganese. <sup>[3] <\/sup>Health effects also included \u201cchanges in mood and short-term memory, altered reaction time, and reduced hand-eye coordination. It is not known if these findings have clinical significance.\u201d <sup>[1]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Engineering Safety Controls<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Respirators and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/weldingapp.htm\">local exhaust ventilation<\/a>, also known as fume extractors, are typically recommended engineering safety controls for welding fume control.
