industrial development go back centuries.<\/p>\n<p>In the early 1300s, England\u2019s King Edward I <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3216\" style=\"color: London in the 1300s.\" src=\"http:\/\/sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/EDWARD-I.jpg.w300h300-e1371043547343.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" \/><br \/>\nbanned the burning of a specific coal in<br \/>\nLondon because of its smoke.<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., the desire for clean air started during the industrial revolution in specific municipalities and, over the years, has produced national legislation.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The nation has produced a Clean Air Act in 1963, 1970, and 1990.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NESHAP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants [NESHAP], 40 CFR Part 63, was issued by the EPA because it was required by the Clean Air Act.<\/p>\n<p>It requires control of hazardous air pollutants produced by specific categories of metal fabrication and finishing.<\/p>\n<p>This blog addresses three of the categories regulated by NESHAP: welding, grinding and spray painting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Welding fume control<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Guideline excerpts from an EPA NESHAP presentation stress practicality.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>For example, if practicable, to reduce welding fumes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use welding processes, process variations and process materials [e.g., filler, shielding and carrier gases] that can reduce fume generation rates.<\/li>\n<li>Optimize welding process variables (e.g., electrode diameter, voltage, amperage, welding angle, shield gas flow rate, travel speed).<\/li>\n<li>Use a welding fume capture and control system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/WFE-app-page.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3240\" title=\"SAS Welding Fume large, stationary grinding machines, then your process is subject to NESHAP standards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/grinder_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3224\" title=\"Sentry Air's fume extractors work well for grinding operations.\"
