Depending on the area of study, samples may include:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Plants and Mushrooms<br \/>\n\u2022 Mold<br \/>\n\u2022 Nails<br \/>\n\u2022 Hair<br \/>\n\u2022 Skin<br \/>\n\u2022 DNA<br \/>\n\u2022 Urine<br \/>\n\u2022 Tissue Biopsies<\/p>\n<p>These samples are then tested and analyzed to determine the type of fungus present as well as its effect (positive or negative) on the host sample.<\/p>\n<p>It is important for researchers and laboratory technicians to guard their respiratory health when handling these samples; particularly those in the field of fungal infection and disease research. Microscopic fungal strains, as well as human or animal hair, urine, tissue, and DNA may pose a respiratory risk if inhaled during processing and analysis.<\/p>\n<h2>Recommended Laboratory Safety Standards<\/h2>\n<p>According to the <em>Center for Disease Control\u2019s Guidelines for Safe Work Practices in Human and Animal Medical Diagnostic Laboratories<\/em>, it is \u201crecommended that mycology laboratories that culture for filamentous fungi and manipulate those organisms be separate and isolated from the main microbiology laboratory with negative air pressure moving into the room from the main laboratory.\u201d (CDC)<\/p>\n<p>The Guideline further states that \u201cevery diagnostic microbiology laboratory needs one or more BSC as a primary means of containment for working safely with infectious organisms.\u201d In chapter 3 of the Guideline, the CDC refers to using HEPA filters that remove at least 99.97% of 0.3 \u00b5m particles. The use of a negative-pressure work zone, coupled with a HEPA filter, is a proven safety measure that helps protect workers from inhalation exposure to hazardous-laden microscopic particles.
