According to the CDC, there have been an estimated 11 million illnesses, 120,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths from influenza (data ending week of December 31st) (Cobern 2026)<\/a>. This represents a significant increase from the estimated figures before the holiday, with hospitalizations up 48% (Cobern 2026)<\/a>. Most of the flu cases this season have been caused by a new flu strain called subclade K, a variant of the H3N2 virus and a subtype of influenza A. CDC has shown a steady increase in respiratory illness activity levels by state just from last week. Last week, 20 states were at a very high level, and this week it’s up to 32 states (Cobern 2025 & CDC Dec 2025)<\/a>. Also, last week only 9 states were at a high level, now 16 states are this week (Cobern 2025 & CDC Dec 2025)<\/a>. According to the CDC wastewater data, influenza levels are rapidly climbing. Data from after the holidays shows a further increase. The national average has doubled each week since December 13th:
