Common plating materials include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chromium<\/li>\n<li>Nickel<\/li>\n<li>Cadmium<\/li>\n<li>Zinc<\/li>\n<li>Copper<\/li>\n<li>Silver<\/li>\n<li>Gold<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Chromium, Nickel and Cadmium are all on the International Agency for Research on Cancer&#8217;s (IARC) list of known human carcinogens.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Occupational Safety &amp; Health Administration (OSHA), workers performing electroplating are exposed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/hazardshexavalentchromiumfumes.htm\">hexavalent chromium<\/a> which can cause severe health effects including lung cancer.<\/p>\n<p>When handling and manipulating these metals, it is important to establish a ventilation plan that includes engineering safety controls for increased respiratory protection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fume control for the entire process<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/cleaner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-4167\" title=\"cleaner\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/cleaner-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/cleaner-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/cleaner-419x300.jpg 419w, https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/cleaner.jpg 590w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a>Pre-cleaning<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Pre-cleaning an object before it gets plated is arguably the most important step.<\/p>\n<p>During this stage, grease, fingerprints, dust, grime and other foreign particles are removed from the object.<\/p>\n<p>This process usually requires both physical and chemical cleaning.<\/p>\n<p>Chemical cleaning predominantly requires the use of various alkaline and acids.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/wingedlid-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-4168\" title=\"wingedlid copy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/wingedlid-copy-300x274.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/wingedlid-copy-300x274.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/wingedlid-copy-1024x937.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/wingedlid-copy-327x300.jpg 327w, https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/wingedlid-copy.jpg 1987w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a>For this step, consider using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/benchtopfumeextractor.htm\">table or bench top fume extraction system<\/a> with an activated carbon filter for removing odorous, harmful fumes.<\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/specs\/Laminar-Flow-Hood-Spec-300-WS.htm\">Model 300 Winged Sentry with Lid<\/a> provides up to 350 CFM to pull fumes away from the operators breathing zone and into the filter chamber.<\/p>\n<p>The clear acrylic lid allows greater fume source-containment and still allows operators to work between the unit&#8217;s &#8220;wings&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/2tWOzebxil8\">activated carbon filters<\/a> utilize thousands of tiny carbon granules to adsorb odors before entering the surrounding work area; making them a great solution to hazardous odor control.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"SAS_Robbins Brothers Blog\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/20131015_092400_Gulf-Fwy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"142\" height=\"251\">Plating Bath<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once cleaned, the object is placed in a liquid solution called an&nbsp;electrolyte, otherwise referred to as the &#8220;plating bath&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The bath is a specially designed chemical solution that contains the desired metal dissolved in a form of submicroscopic metallic particles.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, various substances are introduced in the bath to obtain smooth and bright deposits.<\/p>\n<p>The solution acts as a positive charge to the negatively charged object that is to be plated.<\/p>\n<p>Once an electrical current is passed through the solution, the positive ions form a thin layer around the object through a process called &#8220;electrodeposition&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This chemical slurry emits vapors, odors and mist that should be vented away from the operator and surrounding work area.<\/p>\n<p>Robbins Brothers, a national jeweler, came to us with their electroplating application and we provided them with two of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/exhaustapp.htm\">ducted exhaust hoods<\/a> (pictured above).
