{"id":43,"date":"2012-03-23T15:43:00","date_gmt":"2012-03-23T15:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sentryair.com\/blog\/?p=43"},"modified":"2013-05-14T18:04:34","modified_gmt":"2013-05-14T18:04:34","slug":"part-one-compounding-pharmacies-regulatory-airflow-filtration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/product-review\/fume-hoods\/ductless-fume-hood\/part-one-compounding-pharmacies-regulatory-airflow-filtration\/","title":{"rendered":"Part One &#8211; Compounding Pharmacies: Regulatory Airflow and Filtration"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>State regulators enact laws that govern many industries, including compounding pharmacies.<\/div>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<div>Frequently, they rely on performance standards established by other organizations, such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iso.org\/iso\/about.htm\">International Organization for Standardization ( ISO),<\/a> <span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ansi.org\/about_ansi\/faqs\/faqs.aspx?menuid=1\">American National Standards Institute (ANSI<\/a><\/span>), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.org\/business\/about_NSF\/\">NSF International<\/a> (formerly <span>National Sanitation Foundation.)<\/span>.<\/div>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<div>The acronyms of these organizations are often attached to standards cited in legislation, such as \u201cISO Class 5.\u201d<\/div>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4-ucp1BeDys\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<div>Legislation frequently cites established national and international standards, so there can be recurrent regulation overlap from state to state. For instance,California and New Jersey legislation requires many of the same standards as Oklahoma Pharmacy Law. For compounding pharmacies, our containment hoods may be called <em>primary engineering controls<\/em>, sometimes referred to as PECs. They may also be referred to as <em>isolators<\/em>. The category of material being handled \u2013 hazardous, sterile, or non-sterile \u2013 and nature of the material \u2013 liquid, powder, gel, for example &#8212; require different types of engineered controls to <em>protect products, people <\/em>and <em>the work environment<\/em>. <em>A certified industrial hygienist should be consulted to determine the best configuration of primary and secondary engineering controls for your pharmacy.<\/em><\/div>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<div><strong><span>Engineered air flow<\/span>. <\/strong>Air flow can be engineered to do several tasks in a pharmacy. In most cases, air is either designed to move unwanted materials away from a technician and force the capture of those unwanted materials by a filter, <b>OR<\/b> it is engineered to protect sterile compounding products from contamination (usually done by using HEPA-filtered, positive pressure air).<\/div>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<div>Air can be engineered to flow smoothly or with turbulence. Typically, a smooth and even flow of air (laminar flow) is recommended for pharmaceutical applications.<\/div>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<div>An engineered air flow can create changes to air pressure within a room or within a small enclosure. Both negative-pressure and positive-pressure air flow can be used in a pharmaceutical environment for varied tasks.<\/div>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<div>Many of the specifications in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ok.gov\/OSBP\/Rules\/index.html\">Oklahoma Pharmacy Law Book<\/a> address the qualities of engineered air in and around cabinets.
