When zinc-coated metal [i.e. galvanized steel] is heated up, it can release zinc oxide fumes, which can be inhaled by the welder if respiratory precautions are not taken. Although zinc is cited most frequently in conjunction with this illness, there are other metals that have been documented as inducing metal fume fever symptoms [ex. copper, manganese, chromium, arsenic, magnesium, nickel, titanium, boron]. <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">[1]<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">The graph below, from the <b><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Metal Fume Fever: A Review of the Literature and Cases Reported to the Louisiana Poison Control Center, <\/i><\/b><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">shows (A) the most commonly reported occupation and (B) Medical Treatment sought for 26 cases of metal fume fever over a two year period reported to the Louisiana Poison Control Center. <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">[1]<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-HCJEuGBKhfI\/Tic3ISNVFnI\/AAAAAAAAAy4\/epkaXxxTSdU\/s1600\/Occupation_MetalFum.bmp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-HCJEuGBKhfI\/Tic3ISNVFnI\/AAAAAAAAAy4\/epkaXxxTSdU\/s400\/Occupation_MetalFum.bmp\" width=\"400\" height=\"168\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><u><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">What are the symptoms?<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Symptoms of metal fume fever generally mimic flu-like symptoms. They are cited as occurring within <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">approximately<\/i> 3-10 hours after inhaling fumes. They include <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">fever (rarely exceeding 102\u00b0 F), chills, nausea, dryness of the throat, couch, fatigue, and general weakness and aching of the head and body<\/i>. The victim may sweat profusely for a few hours, after which the body temperature begins to return to normal.\u201d<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"> [2]<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Because these systems are very generic and could be easily mistaken for a variety of other illnesses, it is important to discuss your occupational history with your physician.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">The figure below, from the <b><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Metal Fume Fever: A Review of the Literature and Cases Reported to the Louisiana Poison Control Center, <\/i><\/b><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">graphs the most commonly reported symptoms in a survey of individuals who developed metal fume fever after a workplace exposure [March 2004- March 2006]. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-ax4u_C_6AFQ\/Tic6dYdlUlI\/AAAAAAAAAy8\/W9U8rY2Ex2E\/s1600\/Symptoms_WeldingFume.bmp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-ax4u_C_6AFQ\/Tic6dYdlUlI\/AAAAAAAAAy8\/W9U8rY2Ex2E\/s400\/Symptoms_WeldingFume.bmp\" width=\"361\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><u><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">How long do symptoms last?<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Symptoms should resolve within 24-48 hours, while it may take another one or two days to recover from a short-term tolerance to zinc fumes. Overall, four days is cited as the time frame in which one should fully recover.<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"> [1]<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">The long-term health effects of repeated bouts of metal fume fever and zinc oxide fume exposure are inconclusive. Some medical professionals theorize that repeated exposure may later develop into <u><a href=\"http:\/\/sentryairsystems.blogspot.com\/2010\/05\/awareness-occupational-asthma.html\">Occupational Asthma<\/a><\/u>; however, this has not been proved. Others suggest that metal fume fever presents \u201creversible respiratory symptom[s]\u201d, which do not result in long-term lung damage.<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"> [1]<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><u><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">What specifically causes metal fume fever?<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">The specific cause of metal fume fever is also not fully understood; however, a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cytokine\"><span style=\"color: blue; font-family: inherit;\">cytokine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">-mediated immune response is thought to be involved. Collective data shows an increase in levels of certain cytokines in the lungs of exposed individuals that are most likely the result of stimulation of pulmonary <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Macrophage\"><span style=\"color: blue; font-family: inherit;\">macrophages <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">by the metal fume. <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">[1]<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><u>Treatment<\/u><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">A report published by <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">The Journal of the Louisiana State Medical Society<\/i> describes the following as treatment of metal fume fever: <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">\u201cTreatment of mild MFF consists of bed rest and symptomatic therapy (eg, analgesics, oxygen therapy, and antipyretics) as indicated.
