Various measurement techniques can be performed to acquire this rating.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asbcnet.org\/\">American Society of Brewing Chemists\u2019<\/a> (ASBC) Method of Analysis Beer \u2013 23A, is a very common method for performing such test.<\/p>\n<p>The method uses certain chemicals that aid in component separation and extraction.<\/p>\n<p>Chemicals include : <strong>1-Octanol<\/strong>; <strong>2, 2, 4-Trimethylpentane<\/strong>; and <strong>3 N Hydrochloric Acid<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_97940\" style=\"width: 245px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wetnewf.org\/pdfs\/measuring-bitterness\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97940\" class=\" wp-image-97940 \" alt=\"Source: WETNEWF.org\" src=\"http:\/\/sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/dsc_0864_med.jpeg\" width=\"235\" height=\"154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/dsc_0864_med.jpeg 391w, https:\/\/www.sentryair.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/dsc_0864_med-300x196.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 235px) 100vw, 235px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-97940\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: WETNEWF.org<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to Method 23A, the steps to determine bitterness ratios are*:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>Transfer 10 mL of cold carbonated beer to a 50 mL centrifuge tube. Dip the tip of the pipet into octanol and shake off excess.<\/li>\n<li>Add 1 mL 3N\u00a0hydrochloric acid and 20 mL spectrographic grade 2,2,4-Trimethylpentane.<\/li>\n<li>Close the centrifuge tube and shake vigorously for 15 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>If the phases do not separate, centrifuge the tube until they do.<\/li>\n<li>While shaking or centrifuging are underway, prepare an isooctane blank by touching a toothpick or micropipette tip which has been dipped in octanol to the inside of a 1 cm quart curvet. Then pipet in 1-3 mL\u00a0isooctane, depending on how high you must fill cuvets for accurate reading in your spectrophotometer and cap it.<\/li>\n<li>As soon as possible after the completion of shaking or centrifugation, pipet clear isooctane from the centrifuge tube into another 1 cm quartz cuvet and close. The closure prevents evaporation of isooctane, which is beneficial both because the concentration of isohumulone in the cuvet is not increased as octane evaporates, and because the interior of the spectrophotometer is not exposed to hydrocarbon fumes.<\/li>\n<li>Set the photometer to 275 nanometers wavelength, zero the instrument with the blank and read the absorption. Multiply the absorption value by 50.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5 class=\"alignleft\">*As adapted by <a
