Small, Portable Fume Hoods for Gold Purity Testing

Due to the recent increase of buying and selling gold, we have seen requests for acid gas fume extraction increase significantly as buyers perform gold tests to verify both the material and the value.

Gold purity testing involves dropping nitric acid onto the gold to see how it reacts (Lacywest.com explains how this process is done here).

Additionally, aqua regia can be used to determine the karat of the metal. Aqua regia is a 3:1 ratio of hydrochloric to nitric acid.

When an acid is removed from its container, it releases acid gas fumes that are extremely corrosive and toxic. In fact, overexposure to acid gas can result in damage to both the respiratory and circulatory systems.

Adequate ventilation is therefore suggested for those conducting these purity tests.

Two of our most popular units for this application are the 18 in.-wide Ductless Fume Hood [Model SS-218-DCH] and the Winged Sentry [Model SS-200-WSL]. Both of these units fit the needs of this application very well: they pull fumes away from the operator’s breathing zone and into a special acid-gas filter that traps them.

These models are easy to use, small and portable, which is perfect for areas with limited space and on-the-go testing. Both units are equipped with a pre-filter and 2.5 lb. specialty-blended acid-gas filter for optimum protection.

Sentry Air also offers larger ductless units that offer the advantage of portability and also do not require any exterior ducting or venting.

If you have unique needs for your gold testing application, Sentry Air sales representatives will take time to understand your application so that the unit and filter media we offer will be specialized to meet those specific needs and provide you with a safe environment.

The 18” Ductless Fume Hood (pictured above) provides a compact enclosure for the operator to work within. The powerful fan located at the top of the unit pulls fumes away from the operator’s breathing zone and into the filtration system. This unit is approximately 30 lbs, portable and compact.

An optional fluorescent light is available for interior illumination of the hood.

The Winged Sentry (pictured here with optional lid) provides an enclosure with adjustable side wings that direct fumes into the filtration system. This unit weighs only 12 lbs.
