Lessen this Flu Season with UV Air Purifiers

UV Air Purifiers Flu Reduction

UV Air Purifiers, like the Germ Killer UVC 200, help reduce disease transmission such as the flu in medical facilities and heavily populated areas.

With the sharp rise in flu activity this winter, facilities can implement UV Air Purifiers to help reduce disease transmission and keep staff, customers, and patients healthy this season. According to the CDC, there have been an estimated 11 million illnesses, 120,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths from influenza (data ending week of December 31st) (Cobern 2026). This represents a significant increase from the estimated figures before the holiday, with hospitalizations up 48% (Cobern 2026). Most of the flu cases this season have been caused by a new flu strain called subclade K, a variant of the H3N2 virus and a subtype of influenza A. CDC has shown a steady increase in respiratory illness activity levels by state just from last week. Last week, 20 states were at a very high level, and this week it’s up to 32 states (Cobern 2025 & CDC Dec 2025). Also, last week only 9 states were at a high level, now 16 states are this week (Cobern 2025 & CDC Dec 2025). Please see the map below for details of respiratory illness activity level by state (CDC Dec 2025). Click on the image to view the interactive map from CDC

December 2025 CDC Wastewater Data for the Flu

According to the CDC wastewater data, influenza levels are rapidly climbing. Data from after the holidays shows a further increase. The national average has doubled each week since December 13th:
Week ending 12/27: 12.29/high
Week ending 12/20: 6.43/moderate
Week ending 12/13: 3.26/very low

Please look at the chart below to see the increasing flu activity from wastewater data by section of the US (CDC 2026).

Week Ending Date
Area of the US 12/27 12/20 12/13
National Average 12.29 – high 6.43 – moderate 3.26 – very low
Midwest 13.61 – high 6.00 – moderate 2.2 – very low
South 10.97 – moderate 6.67 – moderate 3.66 – very low
Northeast 14.10 – high 11.54 – high 6.53 – moderate
West 8.21 – moderate 6.2 – moderate 2.87 – very low

Flu & Disease Prevention Strategies

To help prevent flu and other disease transmission, the CDC recommends implementing the following best practices (CDC April 2025):
• Get the influenza vaccine
• Use proper hand washing techniques and cough etiquette
• Disinfect frequently touched surfaces
• Isolate infected individuals
• Implement engineering infection controls such as UV Air Purifiers

Using UV Light Air Purifiers as an Engineering Control to Help Reduce Flu Levels

UV air purifier flu prevention

The Germ Killer UVC 200 helps reduce disease transmission and keep staff, students, and/or patients healthy.

The Germ Killer UVC 200 offers a portable yet powerful solution to help reduce disease transmission and airborne flu levels. This system draws in ambient air using a powerful fan and exposes the air, including airborne microorganisms, to two UV lamps. The UV lamps emit the germicidal wavelength of UVC light – 254 nm – effectively deactivating microorganisms like viruses, bacteria, and fungi. UV light works by damaging the microorganism’s DNA/RNA and preventing the spread/reproduction of diseases like the flu. This system offers safe operation with a UV light-tight disinfection chamber and UL certification.

How effective is the Germ Killer UVC 200 with influenza and other pathogens?

To illustrate the effectiveness of the Germ Killer UVC 200 – our experts calculated the average fluence of the UV light lamps coupled with log reduction calculations. Our team found the Germ Killer to be up to 99.999% effective on Influenza A. Please see the chart below for more calculations for effectiveness of different pathogens.
