Technical Education Center Protects Students’ Lungs with Welding Fume Extractors

SAS_300_SKYSentry Air Systems recently provided a Technical Education Center with fume extraction systems for their welding students to use during classes and training.

The center provides hands-on courses for a variety of welding techniques including Shield Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) processes.

All of these processes pose a respiratory hazard because they generate smoke and fume full of very fine, respirable particles. Common particles include chromium, nickel, arsenic, asbestos, manganese, silica, beryllium, cadmium, cobalt, copper, lead and zinc.

For more information about the hazards of these particles, read our article on The Hazards of Welding Smoke on our website.

Fume Extraction for Every Workstation

Sentry Air Systems Sales Associate, Alaina LaFleur worked with the Technical Education Center to determine their needs, goals and space requirements and recommended pairing two of our fume extractor configurations: The Model 300 Welding Fume Extractor and the Model 300 Wall Mounted Sky Sentry.

SAS_300_WFEThe Model 300 Welding Fume Extractor, pictured to the left, is a popular option for welding applications where space is limited. The small footprint, portability handle and casters allow the unit to easily move around a tight space and the self-supportive, flame-retardant flex hose allows the operator to position the inlet hood exactly where the fumes are being emitted.

We placed a 300-WFE unit in a series of the Center’s welding cells so that students could work simultaneously during training classes.

Model# SS-300-WFE

  • Up to 350 CFM
  • Variable speed control standard on 115V units
  • 66 dBA (High)

SAS_300_SKY_2The Model 300 Sky Sentry, pictured to the left, is a highly effective, wall mounted fume extractor. The free-hanging, self-supportive and flame-retardant flex arm features a 62.5” swivel radius. This sleek configuration keeps the fume extractor off of the floor and frees up valuable work area.

For larger-sized projects that require a greater work area, the Center has another series of welding cells positioned along a wall. For this series, they installed individual Sky Sentry units for each cell.

Model# SS-300-SKY

  • Up to 350 CFM
  • Variable speed control standard on 115V units
  • 66 dBA (High)

Each of the 300-WFE and 300-SKY units were equipped with a Carbon Pre-Filter Pad and main HEPA filter. Our HEPA filters are up to 99.97% efficient on particles 0.3 microns and larger while our Carbon Pre-Filter Pads have a MERV 7 efficiency rating and work to eliminate odorous fume.

In addition, all of the units were outfitted with an Hour Counter and Magnehelic Gauge. The Hour Counter displays amount of hours the unit has been in operation with a precision of 0.1 hours. The Magnehelic Gauge indicates the saturation level of the HEPA filter and when paired with the Hour Counter, allows a more accurate assessment of the filter’s capacity.
